Martinrea gets out of graphene-enhanced lithium ion battery business

Martinrea Worldwide Inc., is backing away from an early-stage enterprise aimed toward growing graphene-enhanced lithium ion battery cells for electrical automobiles.

The Canadian components provider and its associate NanoXplore Inc., introduced March 27 that the Montreal-based graphene firm has agree to purchase Martinrea’s 50-per-cent stake in VoltaXplore Inc.

The $10 million buy offers NanoXplore full management over the battery three way partnership, which was fashioned in April 2021 to commercialize graphene-enhanced batteries, and had acquired $5 million in funding from Martinrea. VoltaXplore opened a lab-scale manufacturing line in Montreal final yr. It was initially focusing on the beginning of manufacturing at a commercial-scale facility anticipated to value $450 million by mid-2024.

“Although we’re not pursuing the manufacturing of batteries at Martinrea, we consider strongly in graphene and can proceed to work with NanoXplore to develop graphene-based options,” Martinrea CEO Pat D’Eramo stated in a launch.

The Vaughan, Ont.-based provider has collaborated with NanoXplore for years, lately bringing graphene-coated brake strains to market.

Additionally it is the biggest single shareholder within the graphene firm, holding a 21.1-per-cent stake within the publicly traded enterprise firstly of the month. Martinrea’s share of the corporate rose to 22.7 per cent following the $10 million, all-stock VoltaXplore transaction.

Whereas Martinrea is backing away from the battery cell enterprise, NanoXplore CEO Soroush Nazarpour stated the components provider’s early help has helped de-risk the undertaking “considerably.”

NanoXplore is assured within the worth proposition graphene brings to battery cells and plans to proceed scaling the know-how, he added.

“As we work in the direction of our aim to construct the gigafactory, we want to herald new traders and prospects, in addition to authorities financing to help and understand our ambitions.”

NanoXplore stated it has already demonstrated one kind of battery cell constructed on the Montreal line and is now retooling the power to construct bigger cylindrical cells usually used within the EV market.

Testing reveals the graphene-enhanced cells will improve EV battery vary by as much as 10 per cent, whereas slicing cost instances to as little as 10 minutes due to graphene’s excessive conductivity, the corporate stated.
