Rivian is looking to patent a vehicle accessory system that works like a trailer hitch.

A Rivian patent application for this feature was published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on July 4, but was filed by Rivian in late 2022. In the document, Rivian details the use of two brackets to hold accessories, which attach to each other using a set of pins.

One bracket is mounted to the vehicle, while a second slides into it and is retained by the pins. The second bracket serves as the attachment point for accessories, which can include things like cargo carriers or bike racks, Rivian says in the application.

The same assembly could also be used for trailers, Rivian adds, and unlike a conventional trailer hitch it’s flexible. That allows for increased departure angles while towing a trailer, making this hardware perfect for overlanding.

Accessories could be attached and detached manually, or electronically via a connection to a vehicle’s touchscreen or steering wheel controls, Rivian suggests. Accessory brackets could also be hidden behind body cladding when not in use, maintaining the clean appearance and aerodynamic qualities of a vehicle’s exterior, the automaker notes.

Patent filings indicate that Rivian is working on a few potential accessory designs, including a redesigned version of its camp kitchen. But the automaker also needs to get its $45,000 R2 SUV out the door in time for a planned 2026 launch, and then start production of the R3 and R3X hatchbacks. A $5 billion partnership with the Volkswagen Group will likely help fund these projects.
