Smart electric compact crossover to target Tesla Model Y

Smart may be best known for its ForTwo but that minicar is no longer in production. Instead, Smart today is launching electric crossovers bigger than anything we’ve previously seen from the brand.

The next will be the Smart #5, an electric crossover that is expected to measure 185.2 long, or just 2.5 inches less than a Tesla Model Y.

It was previewed by a thinly veiled concept in April and Smart on Monday confirmed the reveal on Aug. 28 in Brisbane, Australia. Sales will start in 2025, but don’t expect it to reach the U.S. as Smart no longer operates here. The #5 is also expected to be built in China, meaning it would attract steep tariffs if sold here.

Teaser shots show the production version will closely mirror the design of the concept. It’s a boxy design accentuated by muscular haunches, lending it a rugged look. Smart said the #5 will also be available with “unexpected outdoor elements,” suggesting some models will feature details like roof racks, skid plates, and potentially even flared wheel arches housing chunky off-road tires.

Teaser for 2025 Smart #5 debuting on Aug. 28, 2024

There’s no shot of the interior but the design will likely be similar to what’s found in the previously shown concept. This means digital screens for the gauge cluster and infotainment system, plus a third screen for the front passenger.

No powertrain details have been released but rumors point to at least one version delivering close to 640 hp. In the concept, there was a dedicated EV platform with 800-volt technology and a battery with a capacity of more than 100 kwh.

The latest Smarts have been developed by a Chinese joint venture established in 2019 between original Smart parent company Mercedes-Benz and Zhejiang Geely. Mercedes is still responsible for the design of the vehicles, while much of the engineering and production is handled by Geely in China.
