• The original Defender’s production run lasted more than three decades
• JLR will now offer an original, fully restored by the factory

Production of the original Land Rover Defender ended in 2016 after a run lasting more than three decades, but there’s still demand for new versions of the iconic off-roader, even as JLR today offers a much-improved successor.

While JLR has no plans to put the original Defender back into production, it’s decided to do the next best thing: offer classic Defenders revamped by the factory.

The automaker on Wednesday announced the Land Rover Classic Defender V8 by Works Bespoke. That’s a convoluted name, but what it basically means is a V-8-powered classic Defender fully restored under the Land Rover Classic department’s new Works Bespoke personalization service.

JLR offered a similar vehicle in 2018, albeit limited to just 150 units. The automaker hasn’t said whether it will also limit its latest classic Defender offering.

JLR sources Defenders built between 2012 and 2016 for the restoration, and buyers can choose either the two-door Defender 90 or four-door Defender 110 body styles. There’s also a long list of accessories available. For real adventurers, the list includes an expedition cage, ladder, and winch, roof‑mounted lights, and all-terrain tires.

Under the hood sits JLR’s own 5.0-liter V-8, in naturally aspirated form. The engine delivers 405 hp and will see the vehicle hit 60 mph from rest in about 5.6 seconds. The top speed is 106 mph.

Along with the new engine, the vehicle also benefits from an 8-speed automatic, uprated brakes and handling kit (springs, dampers, and anti-roll bars), and a choice of wheels ranging from 16-18 inches in diameter. There are updates for the interior, too, including available two-tone configurations and premium materials normally reserved for JLR’s Range Rover lineup. The list also includes modern items like Recaro seats and an infotainment system with a 3.5-inch digital screen that fits in the original dash.

The Land Rover Classic Defender V8 by Works Bespoke will be shown in public for the first time during the 2024 Goodwood Revival running in the U.K. from Sept. 6-8.

Pricing starts at 190,000 British pounds (approximately $251,000), and JLR hasn’t said whether the vehicle will be offered in the U.S., though it isn’t looking likely. However, there are several companies that offer restored classic Defenders on these shores, including some that offer electric conversions.

For existing classic Defender owners, JLR also offers upgrades from the factory, including items for the powertrain and chassis.
