Smart pulled out of the U.S. after 2019 but elsewhere the brand is thriving.
It operates purely as an EV manufacturer, and on Wednesday revealed its biggest model yet, the #5 compact crossover. The reveal is a big deal for a brand famous for the ForTwo minicar.
The #5 is the production version of a concept of the same name shown in April, and at 185 inches long is just two inches shorter than a Tesla Model Y. However, its wheelbase is 114 inches long, which is actually a tad longer than on the Tesla. Coupled with the flat roof, that should mean generous space for the #5.
Full details are being reserved until closer to the market launch early next year, but Smart has confirmed a dedicated EV platform with 800-volt technology and a 100-kwh battery. High-speed charging can deliver a 10-80% charge in as little as 15 minutes, according to Smart.
No additional powertrain specs have been released but rumors point to at least one version delivering close to 640 hp. Smart has confirmed there will be various drive modes, including some for off-roading. These will include Sand, Snow, Mud, and Rock modes.
The #5’s exterior features a boxy design accentuated by muscular haunches, lending it a rugged look. Available accessories can further toughen up the look, as well as improve capability. Some of these are previewed on a special launch edition known as the Summit Edition. It features a roof light bar, a roof carrier, a side ladder, side steps, an electric trailer hitch, and underbody protection.
Inside, there are screens lining the dash, as well as an entertainment system with a built-in projector and a Sennheiser audio system with 21 speakers, one of which is portable. A head-up display with augmented reality is also included. Storage space is a maximum 54 cubic feet at the rear, and a front trunk adds an extra 2.5 cubic feet. Smart hasn’t said what features are standard and available.
The latest Smarts have been developed by a Chinese joint venture established in 2019 between original Smart parent company Mercedes-Benz and Zhejiang Geely. Mercedes is still responsible for the design of the vehicles, while much of the engineering and production is handled by Geely in China.
