2025 Audi Q5 teased ahead of Sept. 2 debut

  • New Audi Q5 debuts on Sept. 2, 2024
  • New Audi Q5 will use the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture
  • Powertrains in the new Q5 should be shared with the new A5

Audi is close to revealing the third generation of its Q5 compact crossover, and to help build excitement the automaker has released a teaser sketch showing the design of the headlight.

Audi has confirmed the covers will come off on Sept. 2, though sales aren’t expected to start until next spring or early next summer. The new Q5 is expected to arrive as a 2025 model in the U.S.

Camouflaged prototypes have been spotted testing in public for more than a year. The regular crossover body style will be launched first but a more coupe-like Q5 Sportback is also planned.

The prototypes point to the new Q5 taking on a much more dramatic look than the somewhat conservatively styled current generation. However, the size appears to be about the same. The headlight in the teaser is seen with a pixel design for the daytime running light element which will likely be configurable in some markets, similar to what Audi introduced in the Q6 E-Tron electric compact crossover.

The new Q5 isn’t an EV. It has been developed around a Volkswagen Group platform known as the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), which debuted in July in a new A5 hatchback. The platform supports hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, though the Q5 isn’t expected to feature this at launch, at least in the U.S.

The powertrains for the U.S. market should match those announced for the new A5. This means a 2.0-liter turbo-4 in the Q5 and a 362-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 in a sportier SQ5. The sole transmission should be a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, and all-wheel drive will also likely be standard in the U.S., which is the case for the current generation.

For the interior, the design will likely be the same as what Audi uses in the A5, meaning a curved panel angled toward the driver and integrating an 11.9-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.5-inch for the Android-based infotainment system.

The Q5 for North America is currently manufactured at Audi’s plant in Mexico, and the new generation is expected to be produced there as well.
