Volvo isn’t done with sedans yet.

On Wednesday, at the debut of the 2025.5 XC90 in Sweden Volvo teased the upcoming ES90 electric sedan.

The image revealed a sedan featuring a raked windshield that differs from today’s gas-powered S90. The design depicts a sedan, though it could be a liftback to better compete with the Audi A6 E-Tron Sportback.

The midsize sedan is expected to be the electric successor to the gas-powered S90 sedan, and the sedan counterpart to the electric EX90 SUV.

Expected to enter production in 2024, the ES90 is believed to be code-named the V551.

In December Volvo announced it completed production of the first “verification prototype” of a new model code-named V551. The prototype was built at the automaker’s factory in Luqiao, China.

Production of the V551 was supposed to start by May. In 2022 an Australian Volvo executive said the automaker would launch an electric midsize sedan by the end of 2024.

Swedish outlet Teknikens Värld reported last year that the V551 will be 196.8 inches long with a wheelbase of 122 inches. That would make the ES90 about 6.3 inches longer than the S90 and 1.6 inches longer than the long wheelbase S90L that arrived in the U.S. for 2018. 

Expected to ride on the SPA2 platform, the ES90 will be twinned with the EX90. That means a battery pack of about 111 kwh, range of about 300 miles, a choice of single-motor rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive, and power output reaching almost 500 hp.

The SPA2 platform supports fast-charging rates of up to 250 kw and bidirectional charging, and its batteries can be charged from 10-80% in about 30 minutes.
