ESPN understands the FIA has requested McLaren to make some modifications to the design, though it’s unclear precisely what these are.

McLaren mentioned in a press release: “While our Baku rear wing complies with the rules and passes all FIA deflection assessments, McLaren have proactively supplied to make some minor changes to the wing following our conversations with the FIA.

“We’d additionally count on the FIA to have related conversations with different groups in relation to the compliance of their rear wings.”

Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur mentioned of the rear wing: “I believe it is greater than borderline. All of us noticed the movies and footage of this, and it’s kind of irritating when, in the event you bear in mind the scenario in Monza, we had 5 vehicles in two hundredths of a second, and you progress from P1 or P2 to P5 or P6 for 2 hundredths of a second.

“In Baku we had ten laps in a row once we arrived side-by-side at Flip 1, so you’ll be able to think about that we’ve a little bit of frustration.”

The controversy follows related discussions concerning the flexibility of entrance wings on the vehicles of McLaren and Mercedes — on that event, Pink Bull and Ferrari each raised inquiries to the FIA.

These entrance wings had been additionally declared to adjust to the rules.

Vasseur clarified the distinction between the 2.

“I believe there’s a type of confusion between what occurred with the entrance wing and the rear wing. The entrance wing all of us agree that it might be a gray space as a result of on the the primary paragraph of the TD [technical directive] is saying you’ll be able to’t design a part of the automotive with the intention of the deformation. Intention is tough to handle.

“The rear wing story is totally completely different as a result of within the article you even have a most deflection, and that is black or white. It is not gray, or darkish gray, or gentle gray. It is black, and black. And for me it is clear.”
