2025 Volkswagen ID.2’s MEB Entry platform starts testing

Volkswagen is in the early stages of development of an electric hatchback to slot in below the compact ID.3 sold overseas, and a test mule has been spotted.

A test mule is where engineers use a makeshift body, typically from an existing vehicle, to hide new mechanicals. In this case they are using the body of the ID.3.

We know the test mule is for a smaller vehicle than the ID.3 by the shortened wheelbase and corresponding shortened rear door. Other differences visible on the test mule include a charging port on the passenger side front fender. On the ID.3, the charging port is located on the passenger side rear fender.

The test mule is thought to ride on a lower-cost version of Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform for mainstream EVs like VW’s ID family, as well as some EVs from other VW Group brands, including the Audi Q4 E-Tron. The lower-cost version, dubbed MEB Entry, is shorter than the regular MEB platform and features a single motor at the front.

Volkswagen ID.2all concept

The platform was previewed in 2023’s VW ID.2all concept, a subcompact hatch with a single motor at the front rated at 222 hp. The concept also came with a battery claimed by VW to deliver 280 miles on the WLTP test cycle used overseas. A lower figure would result using the stricter EPA cycle.

A production version of the ID.2all is expected to be launched on the market in 2025 with a starting price below below 25,000 euros (approximately $27,400). A crossover version is due to follow in 2026. Production will be handled at a plant in Spain. VW Group also plans to build related models for its SEAT and Skoda brands at plants in Spain, and possibly one for the U.S.-bound Cupra performance brand.

The new EVs will likely prove too small for the U.S. market, so don’t expect any to show up here.

VW Group won’t stop at the subcompact class when it comes to affordable EVs. The automaker is also working on an EV that will be priced below 20,000 euros (approximately $21,250), the oft-rumored ID.1. This model will likely be a minicar to replace VW’s e-Up! hatchback, and is due in 2027.
