2026 Range Rover Sport Electric spied with almost zero camouflage

  • An electric Range Rover Sport debuts next year
  • A prototype has been spotted revealing a new grille design is planned
  • The electric Range Rover Sport will use same platform as gas and plug-in hybrid models

JLR is preparing to launch an electric version of its iconic Range Rover later this year, followed shortly by an electric version of the related Range Rover Sport.

Prototypes for the Range Rover Electric have been out and about for a while, and now a prototype for the Range Rover Sport Electric has been spotted for the first time. A debut is set for next year.

Two additional electric Range Rovers sitting in the same segments as the Velar and Evoque are also planned, with a prototype for the Velar-sized electric SUV also spotted earlier this year.

The electric SUVs are part of JLR’s scaled-back electrification plans that will see the automaker launch six EVs by 2026, consisting of the four Range Rovers plus two Jaguars. An electric Discovery Sport and a baby Defender EV were also planned but those models will now arrive later than originally planned.

The first of the new electric Jaguars will be a sporty sedan, a teaser for which was released a year ago. Jaguar is known to be working on three EVs in total. The others are thought to be a large SUV and a flagship sedan.

The upcoming Range Rover Electric and this Range Rover Sport Electric will use the same MLA platform underpinning the current gas-powered SUVs. The electric version of the MLA platform will feature an 800-volt architecture, meaning support for DC fast charging will be included. Support for over-the-air updates and apps designed to help maximize range will also be included, JLR has previously confirmed. Details on battery size and range haven’t been mentioned.

There isn’t much to distinguish the electric SUVs from their gas and plug-in hybrid siblings. The only visual cue looks to be a sealed-off grille, judging by the camouflage gear on the prototypes. There may also be some underbody changes aimed at improving aerodynamic efficiency.

The smaller Velar and Evoque-sized models will use a dedicated EV platform known as the EMA, while electric Jaguars will use a Jaguar-specific EV platform known as the JEA.
